Little Mix - Wings:
  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
This music video showed characteristics of its pop genre through the consistent use of backing dancers and synchronized dance routines. Their dance routines express their personalities and what they are singing about. The dances are also quite repetitive and simple and typical of a pop music video. Also being easy for fans to learn and copy. All four girls in the video wear clothing which is of the same style. For example; they all wear denim shorts and crop tops at a few points in the video. This represents a typical girl group style and shows them as being one unit.

2.There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

The lyrics of this song - Wings are reflected by their dance moves - movement of arms and the bright colourful background and clothing which insinuates their thoughts of they wont blend into the background and they will stand out and be bold. However, the images on the backgrounds have no relevance to the lyrics and mostly used just to attract peoples eye and make the video memorable and easily recognisable.

3. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

One comparison between the music and the visuals is that the upbeat music goes well with the bright colours in the clothing and backgrounds. The energetic dance moves and routines also relates well with the music as there is a strong beat in the tune and this is reflected through the strong dance moves performed by the band members. The band shows what they are singing about through miming and acting to the lyrics. Also shown through expressive facial movements.

4. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

At the very beginning of the music video the screen is split into four and shows close ups of each of the artists.  Other close ups are also shown throughout the video when each of the artists had solos in the song. There were a variety of shots used to build up to these close ups enabling the audience to get familiar with the style of each of the band members and familiarises us with their faces. This then fulfills the demands of the record label as it sells the band in more areas than one (clothing, style, and an overall appeal to modern society).

5. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

Throughout this video the artists don't wear very provocative clothing as they are appealing mostly to quite a young audience. Their clothing doesn't cover the artists up completely but it is quite typically 'cute' clothing and appeals to a young audience. Therefore it doesn't represent many voyeuristic features as it is quite safe. At the beginning of the music video their faces are framed creating a frame within a frame affect. In this video it mostly involves the artists looking towards the camera and dancing either on their own or within the group therefore there is no story telling and not any room for the features of voyeurism to appear.

Group 28 Music Video 2011:

  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
This video is quite relevant to it's genre characteristics of a pop-ballad as it has a story-line which reflects the mood of the song and the acting within the video also relates to the ballad genre. There is no contradicting characteristics such as an upbeat dance routine or bright, bold colours. The video is quite slow, which relates to the beat of the song and the mood of it, again highlighting the ballad aspect of the genre. The pop aspect of this genre is reflected in how there is a male character and a female character acting together, which is quite a typical thing to happen in a pop video.

2.There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

The dark, shadowed room creates quite a gloomy and deep atmosphere, which stresses to the viewer how the main character is heartbroken, which is explained to us in the lyrics which are telling us a story in music form. The lyrics also relate to the changes of scene, for example the bedroom scene swapping to a scene by the river in the light as the song grows more upbeat in the chorus and the female character stands up when the song gets more powerful. The costumes also represent typical male and female dress sense, which shows to us the relationship that we are hearing about in the lyrics, they also relate to the era that the song sounds like it is from.

3.There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

The relationship between the music and the visuals is illustrative as the slow but strong beat and tempo to the song is reflected in the colours of the settings (changing from light to dark with the different beats) and the actions of the characters, amplifying the dramas between their relationship, especially when the beat becomes stronger and the tempo varies.

4.The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

There are close ups of each character's face throughout this video, which introduces them to us and shows us the power balance in their 'relationship' through the camera angles. Adele's motif as an artist is that she tends to sing ballads about relationships, and the characters do well to reflect this through their expressive actions and believable acting. This element of Adele's motif reoccurs across all of her work and the students chose to use settings and costumes which looked quite similar to a typical Adele music video

5.There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

By the way that the female character is dressed and her make up, the mise en scene they have chosen expresses to the audience how she is quite a vunerable character. The setting of the bedroom and the mirror could provoke thoughts of a voyeuristic nature to male viewers. Due to the style of the video having a storyline of a couple. there isn't many other voyeuristic features such as telescopes etc

6.There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc)

Due to the setting and costumes of this video, it is quite a lot like how a short film from the sixties era would look.  There isn't much reference to other music videos as this is quite a different style of video and is unique and original. Although, it could vaguely be compared to the 'Love The Way You Lie' video by Rihanna and Eminem due to the fact that a couple are having an argument in a bedroom in both videos.
