Some examples of music videos now and present and what type of genre category they fall under and why:
- Never Ever by All Saints:
* Genre: Pop
*Conventions: Coordinated colour of clothing worn (black), Only 3 girls in the video, The beginning of the video tells a story (it began with an old video being played of a girl and boy in love, Lots of close up shots were used where the singer makes strong eye contact with the viewer, Parallel edits were used which flicked back and forth from two locations.
-Hanging on the telephone by Blondie:
*Genre: Pop/Rock
*Conventions: Use of standing microphones, Use of orchestral instruments (Drums and guitars), Lots of close up camera shots of blondie and the muscians showing the video to be more like a live performance recording, All muscicians wore the same style of clothing which was black coloured, studded, leather clothing.
-Cars by Gary Newman:
*Genre: Electro Pop
*Conventions: Use of special effects to create a mirror image of his face, Heightened use of transitions to unique style (reflecting the song), The main camera focus is on the artist for the entire video drawing in the intense genre audience, Frequent use of mid shots highlighting the clothing worn (dark colours; blacks, greys), the make up worn (black eyeliner) and eccentric hairstyles.
-Gold by Spandau Ballet
* Genre: Pop (early boy band)
* Conventions: Frequently swaps and changes location, Unique recognizable costumes of this era (Frilly shirts, two suits; a formal black one and a white one which he wears in the dessert), Tells a story of finding the golden girl, Set in an exotic location ( Greece, Dessert)
-Pretty fly for a white guy - The Offspring
* Genre: Pop/Rock
*Conventions: Main theme of the video is telling a story - Continual use of bright colour's, cars, girls to tell the story and create the connection between lyrics and visuals. Main talent of singer shown on a stage like a performance (typical pop convention: change of scenery).
